Willows are alternate, sometimes almost opposite, long-leaved, short-stemmed trees or shrubs. Pours leaves in winter. There are also up to 250 types. The inner side of the buds is covered with a single flake of wool. Individually paired and stemless flowers are collected in caterpillar ears.

Male flowers have 2 to 5 male organs free or fused together; female flowers are an ovary with two stigmas on top. Its fruit is a hatch that opens in two jaws; Many seeds carry many silky feather.

Willow is a type of forest tree that usually ends in moist soils and is planted at the rivers and water sides. Some of them are flexible and durable. Most species hybridize between them.

In Turkey, the most common type of white willow and willow (Salix alba). This willow is a tree that can reach 25-30 m and live up to 100 years.

It is grown in willows and creeks. There are other species besides axillary: drooping branched willow (S. Babylonica or S. pendula), a common ornamental tree reaching 8-10 meters; mostly seen in Eastern and Northeast Anatolia and it is very suitable for basketry due to the flexibility of branches or sorghum willow (S. viminalis).

Sorgun, various regions of Anatolia, especially Kastamonu, Daday, Kizilcahamam'da brittle willow (S. fragilis) species. Sorgun and Sepicus Willow, together with Ak Söğüt'le narrow-leaf willow or sorghum willow is called. The willows growing in the forests of Belgrade, Sapanca, Zonguldak and Bolu are called grizzly willow (S. cinerea).

Goat willow (S. caprea) is a type of willow that grows in almost all forest areas and develops rapidly but does not live for more than 50 years. The willow species grown in Ankara, Kızılcahamam and Malatya are called red purple willow (S. purpurea). The type of willow that grows in Bursa, Gümüşhane, Çoruh and Erzurum regions is called almond-leaved willow (S. amygdalinea). The willow that grows in the Ilgaz Mountain region of Bolu, Düzce, is called spindle-leaved willow (S. alargnos).
