Watermelon is a perennial species of cucurbitaceae. The word watermelon has passed from Persian to Turkish. The Dîvânü Lugati't-Türk written by Kaşgarlı Mahmut in 1071 and the Muhakemetü'l-Lugateyn written by Ali Şîr Nevaî are referred to as Büken in Turkish. It can grow up to 3-4 m on the soil surface. Although the roots are very deep under dehydrated agricultural conditions, the fringed roots are concentrated at a depth of 40-50 cm. Its large ball-shaped fruits are sweet and juicy. Watermelon cultivation is widespread in the world and in our country. 20% of world production of watermelon are made in Turkey.
