Mentha, a genus of Labiatae (Lamiaceae) family, grows up to 7 species in Anatolia. 206.878 ha in our country. and its estimated potential is 72,710 tons / year. 

The leaves are used. Among them, the smell of Mentha piperita L. is special and strong, and the taste is springy and cooling. Its composition carries resin, tannins and essential oils (0.5-1%). The essential oil contains terpenes, free and ester menthol (40-60%), menthol (8-10%) and mentholfuren. It is used to relieve nausea, nausea, degassing and odor. Essential oil obtained by water vapor distillation from the flowering and leafy branches of the M.piperita L. species is called peppermint. This essential oil is used as a mild antiseptic, refreshing, fragrance and nausea. From the flowering branches of M.pulegium L., water vapor distillation produces mint juice. Species used under the name of wild mint are M.aquatica L., M.longifolia (L.) Hudson (Syn: M.incana Willd. = M.sylvestris L.).
