It belongs to the family of Lamiaceae. It is a Mediterranean basin plant. Various species grow wild in Thrace, Marmara, Aegean and Mediterranean regions in our country. They are bushy-looking, fragrant plants found in rocky and arid places.
Also known as oregano or oregano, this species is 25-80 cm. it grows long and spreads over the soil. It has dark green leaves that smell like peppers and flowers that bloom in white or pink between June and October. The plant, which loves plenty of sunny or partially shade places, reproduces with the seeds it pours.
aboveground parts contain essential oil, acids, tannins and bitter essences containing substances called carvacrol and thymol. In some places, the leaves are dried and used as a spice instead of thyme. In addition, the oil obtained by distillation of the aboveground parts of the plant is used in the perfumery and liquor industries.
