Myrrh is a resin-like substance from the Commiphora myrrha tree, which is widely available in Africa and the Middle East. Myrrh is associated with plants in terms of botanical families and is one of the most used essential oils in the world.

To collect myrrh, the trunk of the myrrh tree must be cut and the resin inside must be released. The resin is allowed to dry and flows across the tree trunk like a tear. This resin is then collected and essential oil is obtained by steam distillation.

Myrrh oil has a sooty, sweet-bitter smell. It is generally used as a base for perfumes and other fragrances.
