Marjoram is a cold-sensitive plant or a substrate with sweet pine and citrus aromas. In some Middle Eastern countries marjoram is synonymous with thyme and there are also names of marjoram and knotted marjoram used to distinguish it from other plants of the genus Origanum. It is also known as Güveyotu, Keklikotu or Mercan Köşkü. It is known as 'marjoram' in Turkish because of the word 'enjoyment of the mountain' in Persian. It is a medicinal plant of minty family of Turkish and Middle Eastern origin. Today, it grows in many parts of the world, especially in the Mediterranean basin countries. Various species grow wild in our country in Thrace, Aegean, Marmara and Mediterranean regions.
