It belongs to the hemp family. Its homeland is North America and Eurasia, which is a perennial climber that dies partially in certain seasons. The plant, which is widely cultivated in Europe for the beer industry, is produced in the Bilecik and Bursa regions for the same purpose in our country. To grow temperate climate and rich soil; hops, which require high poles and strands stretched between them to wind, can extend up to 7.5 m. His reddish green colored slim and hard body hugs him for whatever he finds; but at the end of the summer he dies with the leaves. The following year new exiles emerge from the same root. Leaves resembling the vine long-stemmed, 3-5 parts, coarse, mutual array, toothed edges, normal green color and heart-shaped. At the end of the summer, the yellowish-green female flower buds, which resemble the cones that bloom at the end of the day, mature and turn into paper-like bogs. Male flowers of the plant bloom in separate plants. It is reproduced with hops seed, by dividing the roots or by removing the young bastards in the spring and planting them separately.
Hops plant contains essential oil, bitter substances (humilon, lupulon), resin, tannin and wax. Female flowers form a substance called strobili lupuli. This substance has been used in beer-making for at least 1200 years. In some countries, young shoots of hops are eaten by being peeled and cooked like asparagus.
