Currant, from saxifragaceae family, which grows in every region of Turkey, is a plant species found in fruits resembling grapes. Currant is Turkey's very humid and a dwarf shrub species that can grow anywhere not too dry. The length is usually up to 100-200 cm. In some places, currant plants shed their leaves in winter, while in some places they spend the winter without shedding their leaves. The roots are fringed and do not go deeper. The branches of the bush are weak and give place shoots from the bottom every year. Fruits are in small clusters. Grains on rounds are round and very bright in color. As the shell surrounding the fruit grains is translucent, the kernels inside can be seen carefully. Fruits are piquant and sweet.
The most preferred cultivation and most widely used among humans is the big red currant. It is more efficient in the kitchen because its fruits are large and juicy.
Red currant grows almost everywhere except in extremely arid or extremely moist areas. Cultivation can be done with shoots taken from the roots, as well as by planting the fruit seeds in pots. Since the plant wakes up early in the spring, October-November-December is the best time to plant seedlings. It is suitable to plant the chives of the grapes to be planted at 1 meter intervals. Chives should be pruned every year, if pruning is done, the yield will decrease. Pruning is simple; Pruning thick and old branches is enough. Some of the new shoots that emerge from the roots are cut off and the deformed ones are thrown away. They are affected by dry seasons as their roots are about 20-30 centimeters below the soil. In dry seasons it may need to be watered every two days. When the fruits are ripe, they must be collected. With increasing awareness of chives, planting has increased. Most city nurseries and seedlings are sold online. Saplings can also be grown by planting seeds directly into the soil.
